What is The Alchemical Journey?

The Alchemical Journey was conceived my myself, John Wadsworth, in November 2006 as a way of accessing the timeless astrological and alchemical wisdom that I believe we all carry within us. Having worked as an astrologer for seventeen years, I have not only experienced the transformational power of astrological ideas for myself, but have also come to realise that we have all access to this, not simply astrologers. Astrology seems to provide us with a profound map of the human psyche that can better enable us to navigate our lives. It is something that we all somehow seem to recognise, even if we have forgotten that we do.

The programme is currently enjoying its third round, and is in its first year as a full 12 month programme. (I have run the programme twice as a 12-week course). For 2009-10, I will be working together with Dr Anthony Thorley, a research geomancer and expert in sacred landscape, expecially landscape zodiacs, about which he is currently conducting PhD research. Anthony's immense cultural and spiritual knowledge and experience has added another dimension to the programme, and allows us to drop even deeper into first-hand experience of these ancient wisdom traditions.

The Alchemical Journey draws its inspiration specifically from the time-honoured understanding of the seasonal, astrological and bio-rhythmic cycles of the year and this journey is about harnessing the transformational processes inherent in the unfolding story of the year.

It is really about orienting ourselves in the world and recovering the sense that we belong to a cosmos that is personally meaningful to us and there being coherent paths that we can follow.  It’s the realisation of how our pathways on earth mirror the pathways of the sun through the seasons, of the sun, moon and planets through the heavens.

During the programme we explore our relationship to the cycles of the year, as we journey through the elements, the seasons, the astrological phases of the year.  It becomes a journey of action-based learning and self-enquiry. And, as facilitators, we stimulate that learning in many ways - for example through guided imagery, journal-keeping, music, dance, astrodrama, film, discussion and walking through sacred landscapes. 

so the Alchemical Journey is all about participation.  It’s about participating more fully in the magic of life and allowing a path to unfold synchronistically before us, a path that we know is right for us.
